That is what the FTC ordered HomeAdvisor – part of Angi, also sold as “Angi Leads” – to pay to contractors.

According to the FTC, HomeAdvisor misrepresented the quality, characteristics and source of its leads, and the share of leads that would turn into jobs. Contractors had paid $287.99 a year plus a fee for every lead – for leads that, in many cases, were not even in their trade or their area.

That is what happens when a platform earns on every lead: the more leads it sells you, the more it makes – whether you get the job or not.

Do I pay for leads that never turn into a job?

On Angi and Thumbtack the fee is for the lead itself – it is charged before you know whether there is a job. On WrightGuild there are no lead fees at all: the membership is the same whether you get one job or fifty.

What did the FTC find about HomeAdvisor?
